Eating Disordered Doesn’t Always Mean Underweight

20

August

When you hear the term “eating disordered,” you probably automatically picture a frail, weak, underweight waif. Contrary to this common perception, being underweight is by no means a criteria of all, or most, recognized eating disorders. In fact, it is the exception, rather than the rule. Many of those who suffer from disordered eating habits are more likely to be within a normal weight range, or overweight, rather than at an unhealthily low weight.

For example, people who engage in bulimic purging behaviors are at least as likely to be slightly overweight rather than underweight; being severely underweight while suffering from bulimia is rare. And those who are diagnosed with Compulsive Over Eating or Binge Eating disorders are almost always over their ideal body weight from a medical standpoint.

Being within, or over, recommended weight ranges doesn’t necessarily mean that those afflicted by these diseases face less serious health consequences than anorexics, who are more likely to fail to maintain minimum healthy body weights. Many of the effects of malnourishment, including vitamin and mineral, or protein, deficiencies, are equally present, even if calorie intake is adequate.

Nor does it mean that they are suffering less acutely in a psychological or emotional sense.

Avoid Costly Customs Regulations When Buying Wine Abroad

Sampling the wine in a foreign country can be an enjoyable cultural benefit of traveling abroad, for wine enthusiasts. However, due to strict regulations regarding the transportation of alcohol across borders, bringing a new discovery home to one’s own wine cellar can be frustrating and costly. While a bottle or two may be possible in checked luggage, without incurring fines from customs officials, bringing home an entire case of wine is an entirely different matter.

The first solution that may come to mind is shipping the wine home oneself. Doing so, however, is more easily thought of than accomplished. Regardless of the shipping restrictions in the country one is visiting, it is unlawful for individuals to ship alcohol in the United States. A traveler’s attempt to ship wine back to his or her home address is likely to end in the wine being confiscated by the postal service, and possibly will result in heavy fines.

These frustrations can be avoided, however, if the wine is shipped directly from a wine retailer. Rather than purchasing wine, and shipping it as an individual, find out if the vineyard or winery itself can accommodate international shipping. Even if they cannot, they can probably direct you to a retail location which carries their wines and can ship internationally.

French Press Facts

Electric coffee pots, due to their automated, consistent results, programmable features, and relatively inexpensive price tags are common in America. But another reason for their popularity, and a less well-founded one, is simple familiarity. Americans are accustomed to electric coffee pots, and so they use them.

With specialty cafes now playing a major role in mainstream life, however, more people are becoming dissatisfied with the results of their coffee pots as compared to what they drink in cafes that prepare their coffee using various European methods. As a result, more and more consumers are investigating these methods at home, and some prefer them to electric coffee pot.

One of these methods is known as the French Press. A French Press, also called a coffee plunger in some regions, is a simple, self-contained, filterless brewing system that uses no electricity. It consists of a pitcher which is divided into two sections by a mesh screen, and a movable piece called the plunger or piston. Coffee is placed in the upper compartment with hot water and allowed to brew for several minutes. The water is then forced through the coffee and the mesh screen into the lower compartment, resulting in strong, full flavored brew.

Storing Onions Year Round

August

Onions are one of the easiest to store vegetables, as they require neither canning nor freezing to keep well and retain their flavor for several months.  If you garden and produced a large crop of onions, or if your supermarket has a fantastic sale on your favorite variety, storing the surplus will save both money and time, as you’ll have onions available for convenient use on demand.

If they are onions you yourself have harvested, you’ll need to lay the bulbs out in a warm, dry place to allow the moisture from several layers of the ‘skin’ to evaporate.  Don’t cut off the stalks, as they are handy for storage.  Once the onions have dried sufficiently, braid the onions successively so that the bulbs hang at intervals, not touching one another.  These onion braids can be hung to dry, and by carefully cutting each bulb off as needed, the braid will remain intact to hold the onions yet to be used.

Onions purchased from the supermarket or vegetable stand do not usually retain their stalks, so another method must be used.  Using old pantyhose as storage bags keeps the onions free of moisture. Slide an onion inside the leg of a pair of pantyhose, down to the toe.  Tie a knot above it, and insert the next onion.  Continue adding onions between knots.

Regardless of method, hang the onions in a cool, dry, dark place for storage.

Roofing Resources Across the Country

Thanks to the convenience of the internet, you can find whatever you’re looking for more easily than ever. And right now, finding the right contractors for your home maintenance is of utmost importance. Whether you need a roof inspection in Detroit, or a landscaper in Houston, online resources can be a key to keeping your property in the best possible shape.

Housing values have dropped dramatically in the past several years, and property owners from coast to coast have found themselves coping with higher interest rates and the looming prospect of upside down mortgages. Raising your home’s value is one way to combat this problem. A San Francisco roof installation might cost money in the short term, but it pays for itself when the time for an appraisal approaches.

Keeping your home in good repair is important no matter what the state of the economy is, but in a challenged housing market, failing to do so can be devastating. Some homeowners seem to think unless they detect a noticeable problem, their roof will take care of itself.

Nothing could be further from the truth. If you own a home, you should have your roof regularly inspected by a professional, have all repairs completed while they are still minor, and replace your roof as recommended, depending on its specific type. Find one local to you. A certified Scottsdale roofing contractor, in Arizona, for example, can save you time and money by taking care of repairs efficiently and without making expensive mistakes.
