Electric coffee pots, due to their automated, consistent results, programmable features, and relatively inexpensive price tags are common in America. But another reason for their popularity, and a less well-founded one, is simple familiarity. Americans are accustomed to electric coffee pots, and so they use them.

With specialty cafes now playing a major role in mainstream life, however, more people are becoming dissatisfied with the results of their coffee pots as compared to what they drink in cafes that prepare their coffee using various European methods. As a result, more and more consumers are investigating these methods at home, and some prefer them to electric coffee pot.

One of these methods is known as the French Press. A French Press, also called a coffee plunger in some regions, is a simple, self-contained, filterless brewing system that uses no electricity. It consists of a pitcher which is divided into two sections by a mesh screen, and a movable piece called the plunger or piston. Coffee is placed in the upper compartment with hot water and allowed to brew for several minutes. The water is then forced through the coffee and the mesh screen into the lower compartment, resulting in strong, full flavored brew.
